Sedation Options in Ferris, Texas
If dental visits make you feel anxious, sedation dentistry can help you stay relaxed and comfortable throughout your appointment. At Ferris Family Dentistry, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is inhaled through a small nose mask to ease stress quickly and wears off just as fast, allowing you to return to your day right after your visit. We also provide oral sedation for patients who need a deeper level of relaxation during more involved procedures. Both options are safe, trusted and designed to make dental care a more positive experience.
For patients who require an even higher level of comfort, IV sedation is available through a visiting anesthesiologist, Dr. Joycelyn Wicks, who brings more than 20 years of experience. IV sedation is offered one day per month, with patients requesting this option scheduled together on that designated day. This approach allows us to provide advanced sedation safely while ensuring that you feel fully supported, calm and at ease throughout your treatment.

Prepare for Your Procedure
Getting Ready for Your Appointment: Before your visit, we’ll review your medical history and discuss your level of anxiety to determine whether nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation is the best option for you. Nitrous oxide requires little to no preparation, so you can come to your appointment as usual. Oral sedation and IV sedation both require a bit more planning, including arranging a ride home after your visit to ensure your safety and comfort.
How Sedation Is Given: For nitrous oxide, a small mask is placed over your nose, and as you breathe normally, the calming effects begin within minutes. With oral sedation, medication is taken by mouth before your appointment to help you feel deeply relaxed throughout treatment. IV sedation is administered through a small IV and allows for a deeper, more controlled level of relaxation during your procedure. All three options are safe and effective, and are designed to keep you comfortable every step of the way.

Dental Sedation Process and Next Steps
Monitoring & Treatment: During your procedure, we’ll closely monitor you and adjust sedation as needed for your safety and comfort. With nitrous oxide or oral sedation, you’ll remain awake and responsive, just in a much calmer, more relaxed state. With IV sedation, you’ll reach a deeper level of relaxation while still being carefully monitored throughout treatment.
Recovery & Aftercare: After treatment with nitrous oxide, the gas is replaced with oxygen and the effects fade within minutes, allowing you to safely resume normal activities, including driving yourself home. Oral sedation and IV sedation both require additional recovery time, so you’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home and plan to rest as the medication continues to wear off.
