What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If you’re dealing with tooth pain or worried about a dental issue, call our office in Ferris. We’re here to help! We will talk through the situation and determine if you need emergency treatment. If not, we will provide you with the steps to take to alleviate the issue in the meantime.

Urgent Dental Emergencies include:

  • Severe toothache
  • A dental abscess
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A broken tooth or a large piece of your tooth is missing

Non-Urgent Dental Emergencies include:

  • A lost filling, crown, or bridge
  • Dull toothache
  • Food lodged between your teeth or gums
  • A minor chip or crack in your tooth

How To Treat Dental Emergencies At Home

While we try our best to accommodate dental emergencies as quickly as possible, there may be occasions when you need to treat the problem at home before coming in to see Dr. Williams. Taking swift action can also improve the outcome of treatment in our office. Here are the steps to take at home before seeing us:

Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently use dental floss to remove any lodged food. If swelling appears, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek.

Knocked-out Tooth: Pick up the tooth by the crown (avoid touching the root), rinse it with water if it’s dirty, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, keep it moist in milk and seek immediate dental attention.

Loose or Misaligned Tooth: Try to put the tooth back in its original position using very light finger pressure, but do not force it.

Chipped, Cracked, or Fractured Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to control swelling. Visit your dentist immediately.

Abscess or Dental Infection: Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) multiple times a day. Seek immediate dental attention.

Lost Filling or Crown: If a crown falls off, try to put it back in place with over-the-counter dental cement until you can get to the dentist. For lost fillings, stick a piece of sugarless gum into the cavity as a temporary measure.

Severe Bite on the Lips or Tongue: Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply a cold compress. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
