We understand that visiting the dentist may be an uncomfortable experience for some people.

Don’t let fear or anxiety keep you from your best smile! At Ferris Family Dentistry, we offer multiple forms of dental sedation to turn an anxious visit into a calm, relaxed experience.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation makes dental treatments more comfortable. Depending on the procedure, sedation dentistry may not be necessary; however, most patients can still benefit from it regardless of the treatment. Dental sedation can be administered in multiple ways, and it allows anxious patients to relax better so they can have a more comfortable treatment. Sedation also allows Dr. Williams to perform multiple or extensive dental procedures more quickly and efficiently, minimizing the number of visits and time in the dental chair.

Types of Dental Sedation we offer

Ferris Family Dentistry provides multiple sedation options to make you more comfortable, depending on your individual needs. Rest assured that Dr. Williams and Dr. Kim will answer any questions or concerns and recommend the best sedation method for you.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Commonly referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is used in dentistry for its relaxing and euphoric effects. It is known as “laughing gas” due to the euphoria that sometimes creates laughter from the patient. You are aware of your surroundings and can communicate with the doctor and staff for the entire treatment duration.

The gas consists of a safe combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen and is inhaled through a nosepiece. Dr. Williams monitors and controls the level of nitrous oxide throughout the treatment for your safety. The euphoric state will distract you from anxiety, the treatment, and surrounding noises. Once the treatment is over, you will likely be able to drive home and continue your daily activities.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Dental anxiety is very real. To accommodate patients with the uneasiness of the dental visit, we offer oral conscious sedation. Upon arrival, we provide you with an oral sedative that relaxes your state of mind. Patients who feel stressed about dental work benefit from the medication because they often become sleepy before the treatment begins.

The anxiety sedative is ideal for patients who have multiple treatment needs and want to complete the treatment in as few visits as possible. Oral conscious sedation is also used with nitrous oxide to supplement the sedative’s effects. Although you may fall asleep during the procedure, you will be able to communicate with the doctor and staff the entire time. Your vital signs and comfort level are closely monitored throughout your visit. You will need someone to drive you home after your treatment.

IV Conscious Sedation

IV Conscious sedation is available in our office for patients who have extensive dental needs or extreme anxiety with dental treatment. A Dental Anesthesiologist will be scheduled to come to our office and provide the sedative. With IV Conscious sedation, your body and mind will fully relax, thus making the treatment easier and faster for you.

Once under sedation, patients can respond to verbal commands and can breathe without assistance. After the treatment, you will be very drowsy and most likely not remember any of the treatment. You will need someone to drive you home. The sedative should clear your body the next day, and you can return to normal activities.
