What To Do In A Dental Emergency
Toothache:
Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently use dental floss to remove any lodged food. If there is any swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek.
Knocked-out Tooth:
Call us immediately, or get someone to call us for you. Gently pick up the tooth by the crown (avoid touching the root), rinse it carefully with milk or water if it’s dirty, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, keep it submerged in milk in a sealed container. Bring it with you to your emergency appointment.
Loose or Misaligned Tooth:
Try to put the tooth back in its original position using very light finger pressure, but do not force it.
Chipped, Cracked, or Fractured Tooth:
Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to control swelling. Visit us immediately.
Abscess or Dental Infection:
Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) multiple times a day. Seek immediate dental attention.
Lost Filling or Crown:
If a crown falls off, try to put it back in place with over-the-counter dental cement until you can get to the dentist. For lost fillings, stick a piece of sugarless gum into the cavity as a temporary measure.
Severe Bite on the Lips or Tongue:
Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply a cold compress. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
